Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains of central-west Virginia, you’ll find the quiet community of Warm Springs, Virginia. This is the place you come to start your day surrounded on the trails by mountain forests and soak in the relaxing minerals of the Warm Springs baths to end the day.Your three night itinerary includes a stay in the most charming, The Inn at GristMill Square, which is the perfect spot to rest your head after the days’ activities. You’ll feel like you’re in a 19th century colonial village, with lovingly restored historic buildings and an elegant restaurant and pub housed in a converted mill, with the kindest owners and staff.Our horseback riding partner will take you out for three days of rides: intro ride on arrival day (1-2 hr) and two longer rides the next two days (2-3 hours). The horses are in excellent condition, forward, and fun. You may even be on a rescue horse that has been rehabbed into an incredible trail horse. On your two longer riders, sack lunches will be provided for easy picnics.Lastly, your soaks in the Warm Springs Pools are the perfect way to end the day — 50 minutes of healing, quiet rest in 98.6 degree water that fills your soul and gives your body minerals that you didn’t know you needed. Trust us when we say — getting dressed for dinner will be a challenge, but totally worth it to visit the Waterwheel Restaurant for a contemporary farm-to-table dinner located at the Inn or a visit to Jefferson’s Taproom at the historic Homestead Resort.

Day one is about getting settled in! Check in at the Inn starts at 3:00 pm, but you can drop your stuff and head out to the farm to meet your guide and horses for your late afternoon/sunset ride (1-2 hours). Recommended arrival in Warm Springs by 2:00.

Day 1 

Start off with breakfast at the Inn before setting off to the Hidden Valley where you’ll meet your horses and guide for a 3 hour ride through the Wilderness, crossing the Jackson River and seeing some of the best views in Bath County. After a picnic lunch and rest, you’ll head to the Warm Springs bath for a 50 minute soak to ease your muscles and your mind.

Today, you’ll repeat yesterday but in a different riding location. With an excellent breakfast, three hours of riding in Douthat State Park, one of Virginia’s largest and most beautiful parks, followed by another 50 minute Warm Springs bath, you will end the day relaxed and refreshed.

One final breakfast at the Inn before heading out. If you have time, add on an optional ride or one last warm springs soak before heading home. Either way, you'll be feeling renewed from the weekend and ready to take on the world.

Warm Springs and Allegheny Mountains Ride

Single Occupancy Rate 

The complimentary continental breakfast baskets are delivered to your accommodation each morning between 8:00 and 10:00. The menu changes daily; but the menu is fixed and what is served is the choice of the Chef. There will be a $15.00 charge per breakfast for any menu change inclusive of special dietary requests; a request for breakfast outside and any other special service request

Sunday Soak in the Warm Springs 

If you booked a double occupancy room and have a non-riding companion, there are loads of other activities in the Warm Springs area to keep them busy: golf, hiking, spa, or just relaxing at the Inn! We are happy to arrange activities for them as well. Over Thanksgiving, our guests have the opportunity to ride across an expanse of 21,000 acres, covering the different areas on the reserve and the conservancy.This 6 night Signature Safari is the original Horizon Horseback riding holiday, which is based on the historic Baber family estate. We run a herd of over 110 free roaming horses and can cater for all levels of riders from experienced to complete novice. We split the outrides into small groups (4-5) according to ability, so intermediate riders can have a full riding experience and novices can feel safe and secure while enjoying the riding at a slower pace.This is also the perfect horseback holiday for those riders wishing to experience the pleasure of riding with African wildlife in the absence of dangerous game. Wildlife to be seen on the conservancy include giraffe, zebra, plains antelope, leopard, caracal, brown hyena, jackal, hippo, crocodile buffalo, roan, sable and aardvark. There are also over 300 bird species on the reserve.There are two outrides or riding activities a day. Morning rides last 3-4 hours (or less if requested) and afternoon rides are somewhat shorter, usually ending with a sundowner at a beautiful vista. Jumping is also available on request, but is only available to intermediate riders and above. Rides are tailor-made to suit the needs of our guests and we try to be as flexible as possible. The distinguishing feature of this safari is its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

Horseback Riding 

The Signature Safari is based at the Signature Safari Lodge. Signature Safari Lodge –&nbsp;All rooms of the lodge are en suite with&nbsp;either a shower or bath or both facilities.&nbsp;Seven double rooms are separate from&nbsp;the main lodge: three suites overlook the&nbsp;lake and have a small verandah area, the&nbsp;rondavels are a traditional African dwelling&nbsp;adjacent to the lodge. There are also two&nbsp;double rooms in the main lodge.&nbsp;There is a large living area, dining room&nbsp;and large stoep (or verandah) for guests&nbsp;to enjoy. Three delicious meals are served&nbsp;a day with afternoon tea before the ride.&nbsp;All drinks are complimentary. Special diet&nbsp;requirements are catered for.&nbsp;The lodge has a swimming pool alongside&nbsp;the lake.Note: The lodge is&nbsp;located about 3 hours north of Johannesburg in the Waterburg area. It is in a Malaria free zone.

About the Lodge 

Flights into JNB from the US, typically land in the late evening. Because of that, we typically will spend the first night at a hotel close to the airport. If you chose to fly in the morning of the transfer (11/23), your flight needs to arrive before 09h45 on arrival day. Flights home must depart after 19h30 on departure day (11/29). We are happy to arrange your flights and hotel stay. It can be added on after booking or during booking.
